The Design Story

Polished black horn and opalescent mother-of-pearl shell form a handmade tiled frame with sharp graphic contrast.

The Julianna Horn & Shell Mirror brings an old inlay craft into a far more graphic composition. Dark polished horn tiles are arranged with opalescent mother-of-pearl shell around the 24-inch round mirror, creating a high-contrast frame that shifts between near-black depth and pale iridescence as light moves across it.

Each piece of horn is cut, sanded, polished, and applied by hand, so the repeated pattern retains small material variations rather than reading as a printed surface. Julianna works especially well in an entryway, bedroom, or home office where the frame can act as both mirror and decorative object against a quieter wall.

Material Character

The Nature of the Piece

Julianna depends on the contrast between two natural surfaces. Polished black horn reads dense and dark, while mother-of-pearl shell introduces opalescent flashes that can shift from ivory to cooler pearl tones depending on the light.

The individual tiles are worked and applied by hand, so small differences in tone, edge, and pattern are inherent to the frame. Those variations are central to the craft character of the piece and keep the repeated geometry from looking mechanically printed.

Additional Information

No two homes come together in quite the same way—and neither do the pieces chosen for them. Our collection brings together furnishings and objects from a variety of makers and manufacturers, each with its own production schedules, shipping methods, and delivery options.

We consider those differences part of the process of sourcing pieces with character. Whether an item arrives by parcel within days, travels by freight, or is prepared especially for your order, our focus remains the same: selecting pieces worth bringing into your home and making the journey from their source to your space as thoughtful as possible.

A well-considered home isn't assembled all at once. It takes shape piece by piece, through objects chosen not simply to fill a space, but to make that space feel like home.
