The Étienne Sideboard | Live-Edge Acacia & Black Iron

The Design Story

Solid acacia shaped by the natural edge of the wood, grounded in architectural black iron.

The Étienne Sideboard begins with a disciplined rectangular form, then allows the wood itself to interrupt the geometry. Across its broad façade, six solid acacia door panels meet along an undulating live-edge opening, creating a continuous horizontal line that shifts naturally from one section to the next. Rather than concealing the irregularity of the timber, the design makes it the defining architectural detail.

That restraint is what gives Étienne its presence. There are no conventional pulls competing with the grain and no decorative overlay added to create interest. Knots, tonal transitions, lighter streaks and naturally occurring distinctions remain visible across the acacia, allowing the individual boards to establish the rhythm of the piece. The live edge becomes both functional and expressive, providing access to the doors while breaking the otherwise precise cabinet face with an organic contour.

Slender black iron legs lift the substantial wood case from the floor and introduce a crisp industrial counterpoint without distracting from the material above. Behind the six-door façade, interior shelving provides generous concealed storage across its 71-inch length. Used as a dining-room sideboard, living-room media cabinet or substantial storage piece, Étienne brings warmth to an interior without surrendering the clean architectural language of modern design.

Material Character

The Nature of the Piece

Acacia gives Étienne its identity rather than simply its surface. The wood moves between warm honeyed brown, deeper russet tones and naturally lighter passages, while knots, grain changes and irregular markings remain visible instead of being engineered into uniformity. Across a cabinet this wide, those shifts create a layered composition that changes from door to door.

The live edges bring that variation into three dimensions. Their gently rising and falling contours form a narrow band of shadow through the center of the façade, emphasizing both the thickness of the wood and the individuality of the slabs. Close inspection reveals subtle edge irregularities and transitions in grain that reinforce the material's natural origin.

Black iron provides the visual counterweight: dark, linear and intentionally restrained against the movement of the acacia. The result feels substantial without becoming heavy—a piece in which the construction remains visible because the construction is part of the beauty. Natural variation is inherent to the material and ensures that no two pieces will present exactly alike.

No two homes come together in quite the same way—and neither do the pieces chosen for them. Our collection brings together furnishings and objects from a variety of makers and manufacturers, each with its own production schedules, shipping methods, and delivery options.

We consider those differences part of the process of sourcing pieces with character. Whether an item arrives by parcel within days, travels by freight, or is prepared especially for your order, our focus remains the same: selecting pieces worth bringing into your home and making the journey from their source to your space as thoughtful as possible.

A well-considered home isn't assembled all at once. It takes shape piece by piece, through objects chosen not simply to fill a space, but to make that space feel like home.
