The Design Story

Two sculptural forms. One evolving piece of furniture.

Part furniture, part sculpture, The Yosegi Stool Pair explores what happens when function is allowed to move.

Designed by Yoshiaki Ito, the pair brings the precision of traditional Japanese parquetry into a contemporary form built around transformation. Two individual stools stand independently as compact architectural objects, each composed from Nyato and Hinoki woods arranged to emphasize shifts in grain, tone, plane, and geometry. Bring the pieces together and their relationship changes: the stools nest into a singular sculptural form that can function as a compact side table.

That transformation is integral to the design rather than an added feature. Angled planes, geometric openings, contrasting woods, and carefully considered intersections allow the composition to change depending on how the pieces are positioned and viewed. Separated, they create repetition and dialogue across a room. Nested, they become one concentrated object with an entirely different silhouette.

The result is furniture that refuses to remain static. The Yosegi Pair can move from seating to surface, from two objects to one, allowing its architecture to evolve with the room around it.

Material Character

The Nature of the Piece

The character of The Yosegi Pair comes from the wood itself—and from the deliberate way different woods are brought into conversation.
Nyato contributes deeper reddish-brown and warm amber tones, while Hinoki Cypress introduces lighter passages that sharpen the geometry and reveal the construction of the piece. Rather than disguising these variations beneath a uniform surface, the design uses shifts in grain direction, color, and cut to articulate individual planes.

The parquetry becomes structural ornament: lighter facets interrupt darker expanses, end grain becomes part of the pattern, and every turn reveals another relationship between the woods. Because these are natural materials, variation in grain and tone should be expected, giving each pair its own character.

Here, the construction is not something hidden beneath the design. The construction is the design.

Additional Information

No two homes come together in quite the same way—and neither do the pieces chosen for them. Our collection brings together furnishings and objects from a variety of makers and manufacturers, each with its own production schedules, shipping methods, and delivery options.

We consider those differences part of the process of sourcing pieces with character. Whether an item arrives by parcel within days, travels by freight, or is prepared especially for your order, our focus remains the same: selecting pieces worth bringing into your home and making the journey from their source to your space as thoughtful as possible.

A well-considered home isn't assembled all at once. It takes shape piece by piece, through objects chosen not simply to fill a space, but to make that space feel like home.
