The Design Story

A monumental column of natural onyx transformed from geological sculpture into light

Rising more than five feet, The Sahara Floor Lamp reduces the familiar language of a floor lamp to a single architectural gesture: a tall, rectilinear column formed from natural onyx. There is no conventional shade competing for attention and little ornament beyond what the material created for itself.

Instead, bands of ivory, sand, amber, caramel and deep mineral brown travel vertically through the stone, changing in width, rhythm and intensity across the surface. When illuminated from within, the more translucent portions begin to glow while denser mineral formations remain dramatically defined. What appears substantial and geological when unlit becomes unexpectedly luminous.

At 63 inches high, Sahara has the presence of sculpture and the scale of architecture. Its narrow 12-inch footprint allows that presence to occupy surprisingly little floor space, while the illuminated stone introduces both ambient light and material drama into the room around it.

Sahara Onyx is a small-batch natural material selected by Vilona, and each lamp carries its own individual coloration and banding. The piece shown for a particular listing is the piece received, allowing the natural character of the stone—not a standardized pattern—to determine the final composition.

Material Character

The Nature of the Piece

Sahara reveals two distinctly different expressions of the same stone.

Unlit, the onyx reads with the physicality expected of natural mineral material: layered bands of ivory, sand, caramel and brown travel across the surface in irregular formations, with differences in density and coloration recording the stone's natural development. No two pieces reproduce that movement exactly.

Illumination changes the material without disguising it. More translucent portions allow light to pass through in warm golden tones, while darker and denser mineral bands remain comparatively opaque, creating extraordinary depth across what would otherwise be a flat plane. The effect varies continuously across the column as narrow lines broaden, converge and separate.

That variation is fundamental to Sahara. Differences in color, banding, translucency and natural mineral markings are inherent to the onyx and give each lamp its individual character. Rather than imposing pattern upon the material, the restrained rectilinear form gives the stone an uninterrupted surface on which to reveal its own.
