About the Artist | Erik Linton

Erik Linton of Linton Art creates hand-pulled woodcut prints that transform the growth rings of naturally fallen trees into compelling works of contemporary art. Working directly from the character of the wood, his practice celebrates the intricate patterns, fractures, and individual histories preserved within each cross-section.

Through this distinctive approach to printmaking, the natural passage of time becomes visible, creating artworks that unite organic form, traditional craftsmanship, and an enduring sense of place.

Presented as part of the L’Élément de Joie Designer-in-Residence collection.

The Design Story

Hand-Pulled California Redwood Print by Erik Linton

A study in time, texture, and extraordinary contrast, The Noire Wall Art transforms the growth rings of a California redwood into a striking composition of gold against black. Created by artist Erik Linton from the cross-section of a redwood found on private property outside San Francisco, the artwork preserves the tree's natural history through the intricate marks of a hand-pulled woodcut.

Concentric rings gather, shift, and fracture across the dark ground, their gold-toned impressions suggesting celestial movement as much as botanical structure. What began as a record of a tree's life becomes an almost abstract landscape—one that rewards both a distant view and closer examination.

At 36 by 48 inches, Noire commands attention without relying on ornament. Its restrained palette makes it particularly compelling against deep olive, sapphire, charcoal, or richly textured wallcoverings, while its organic geometry creates an elegant counterpoint to polished stone, dark hardwoods, and sculptural furnishings.

Handmade and signed by the artist, each impression carries the character of the original wood surface and the printing process. Noire is both an architectural statement and a quiet reflection on the passage of time.

Material Character

The Nature of the Piece

The defining quality of Noire lies in the relationship between its dark paper ground and the intricate, gold-toned impression that moves across its surface. Fine concentric markings alternate with broader textured passages, natural interruptions, and deep fissures that reveal the distinctive structure of the original redwood cross-section.

The textured ink introduces subtle variations in density and surface appearance, lending the work a richness that cannot be replicated by a uniformly printed graphic. Against the black background, the lighter markings become especially pronounced, giving the tree's organic geometry a luminous, dimensional presence.

Acid-free archival paper provides the foundation for this handcrafted composition. Because each print is pulled individually, minor variations are part of its artisanal character. The result balances the precision of nature's growth patterns with the expressive irregularity of traditional printmaking.

Additional Information

No two homes come together in quite the same way—and neither do the pieces chosen for them. Our collection brings together furnishings and objects from a variety of makers and manufacturers, each with its own production schedules, shipping methods, and delivery options.

We consider those differences part of the process of sourcing pieces with character. Whether an item arrives by parcel within days, travels by freight, or is prepared especially for your order, our focus remains the same: selecting pieces worth bringing into your home and making the journey from their source to your space as thoughtful as possible.

A well-considered home isn't assembled all at once. It takes shape piece by piece, through objects chosen not simply to fill a space, but to make that space feel like home.
