About the Artist | Erik Linton

Erik Linton of Linton Art creates hand-pulled woodcut prints that transform the growth rings of naturally fallen trees into compelling works of contemporary art. Working directly from the character of the wood, his practice celebrates the intricate patterns, fractures, and individual histories preserved within each cross-section.

Through this distinctive approach to printmaking, the natural passage of time becomes visible, creating artworks that unite organic form, traditional craftsmanship, and an enduring sense of place.

Presented as part of the L’Élément de Joie Designer-in-Residence collection.

The Design Story

Three hand-printed panels revealing 372 years of growth in an extraordinary study of time, texture, and natural form.

Time rarely presents itself in a form we can see. In The Sylvestre Woodcut Triptych, its passage becomes the artwork itself.

Created from the growth-ring impression of a 372-year-old Sitka spruce discovered along the Oregon Coast, this remarkable three-panel composition reveals the visual history preserved within a single tree. Hundreds of concentric rings radiate across the artwork, interrupted by naturally occurring fissures and irregularities that speak to the seasons, environmental conditions, and passage of time recorded within the wood.

Presented as three individual 24″ × 36″ prints, the composition unfolds across a generous horizontal expanse. The sweeping curvature of the tree's growth rings moves from one panel to the next, creating an extraordinary interplay of continuity and separation. Deep black impressions emerge against the pale paper, capturing intricate linear patterns that read almost like an abstract topographical landscape. From a distance, the triptych possesses the graphic authority of contemporary monochromatic art. Viewed closely, its lines reveal the remarkable complexity of a natural structure formed over centuries.

There is something deeply moving about an artwork that allows us to encounter the history of a tree through the marks it left behind. Sylvestre is not simply an interpretation of nature. It is an impression taken from nature itself—a visual record of a life measured in centuries.

Material Character

The Nature of the Piece

Sylvestre's material character begins with the extraordinary intricacy of the wood itself. Fine concentric growth rings extend outward in closely arranged lines, shifting in density, direction, and definition as they move across the composition. Irregular fissures interrupt the circular rhythm, creating dramatic passages of negative space that reveal the natural complexity of the original tree.

The woodcut process translates these characteristics into a highly detailed monochromatic impression. Rich black markings contrast against the pale archival paper, allowing individual rings, delicate textures, and more pronounced structural features to emerge with remarkable clarity. The variation within the printed image produces an almost tactile visual experience, inviting close examination of the intricate marks that compose the larger form.

Across three separate panels, the relationship between material and form becomes especially compelling. The continuous growth-ring imagery creates a sense of movement and connection, while the divisions introduce visual pauses that emphasize the scale and geometry of the original tree.

Additional Information

No two homes come together in quite the same way—and neither do the pieces chosen for them. Our collection brings together furnishings and objects from a variety of makers and manufacturers, each with its own production schedules, shipping methods, and delivery options.

We consider those differences part of the process of sourcing pieces with character. Whether an item arrives by parcel within days, travels by freight, or is prepared especially for your order, our focus remains the same: selecting pieces worth bringing into your home and making the journey from their source to your space as thoughtful as possible.

A well-considered home isn't assembled all at once. It takes shape piece by piece, through objects chosen not simply to fill a space, but to make that space feel like home.
